Ahead of her new movie release, What Happens Later, Meg Ryan is sharing exactly why she decided to take an eight-year hiatus from the scene.

The Hollywood actress co-wrote, directed, and stars in the new rom-com, which is her first time back on the big screen since 2015, when she starred in Ithaca. Now, she’s explaining why she took a break for all those years.

Meg Ryan on why she took an eight-year hiatus

Her break from acting had nothing to do with acting, itself. The 61-year-old revealed she ‘had no interest’ in the Hollywood lifestyle in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“I have to say, I don’t think I was a very good famous person,” she told the publication. “I just don’t think I’m a good celebrity … I just always felt a little bit like life was over, like, outside this little bubble; outside some sort of membrane.

She then recalled expensive cars closing and ‘not being able to hear the outside anymore.’

You’re roped off in that part of thing, and I just knew it’s just not good for an artist or a creative person to have limited life, in a way, to draw from,” the movie star explained.

Meg decided to move out of LA to just “change it up.”

“I’m grateful that my life has so many different aspects to it. I traveled a lot. So, by now, I felt like, oh, I have some stuff to say with this movie,” she concluded.

The new movie will mark her first romcom since Serious Moonlight in 2005. The star is known for her iconic roles in romantic comedy blockbusters including When Harry Met Sally and You’ve Got Mail.

The star is ‘proud’ of her first performance since her long break

Although the movie is her first since a long hiatus, it looks like the actor got straight back into it as she starred alongside David Duchovny.

Opening up in an interview with Carol Burnett for Interview Magazine, she said even though she hadn’t done a role “in a really long time” it was ‘really fun’ doing it with David.

“I hadn’t done a role in a really long time, but it was fun with David. A lot of it was done in two shots. I’m proud of that. I set up everything beforehand so that once we were there, it was just David and I trying to tell the truth.”

What Happens Later will be released in movie theatres on November 3.
